2008 Roman Catholic Scouting Awards Program

TIME: LIGHT OF CHRIST and PARVULI DEI – 7:00pm
COST: Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei Awards are Free, $10.00 per Scout for the International Awareness Award
Saint Brendan’s Parish, in cooperation with Bellingham Pack 120 (Clara Macy School), will host a Roman Catholic Scouting Awards Program for all local, practicing, Roman Catholic Scouts. Father David J. Mullen of Saint Brendan’s will guide the Scouts and their parents through the program during the course of the summer. We anticipate that the Scouts, parents, and Father Mullen will meet two or three times over the summer to review the program materials, guide the Scout’s work, and prepare the Scouts to receive these prestigious religious honors.
Scouts will have the opportunity to work toward earning the following awards:
LIGHT OF CHRIST
This Cub Scout award is for Tiger and Wolf Cub Scouts (ages 6 and 7). The Award consists of a suspension bar and medal depicting Christ’s Light, along with a pocket card. A workbook, available at the New England Scout Shop at a nominal cost, is required for this award. Much of the work will be done within the context of the Catholic home. The only prerequisite for this award is that the Scout be a practicing Catholic.
PARVULI DEI
This Cub Scout award is for Bear and Webelos Cub Scouts (ages 8, 9, and 10). The Award consists of a suspension bar and medal depicting the Holy Family, along with a pocket card. A workbook, available at the New England Scout Shop at a nominal cost, is required for this award. Much of the work will be done within the context of the Catholic home. The only prerequisite for this award is that the Scout be a practicing Catholic.
Participants receiving either of the above awards will be entitled to wear the purple Youth Religious Award Knot on their uniforms as both youth and adult members of the Boy Scouts of America.
INTERNATIONAL AWARENESS RECOGNITION
This Catholic Scout recognition is for all Cub Scouts (ages 6 through 10). The Award consists of a suspension bar and medal depicting Catholic symbols, a pin, and a patch. This recognition explores the international fellowship of Catholic Scouts, and the role that other Catholic Scouting organizations play in the world Scouting movement. There is no workbook for this recognition. Necessary materials and an application will be handed out. Much of the work will be done during the final meeting, after the Scout has completed the requirements for his corresponding religious award. The only prerequisite for this award is that the Scout be a practicing Catholic and have earned the religious award that corresponds to his age. A fee of $10.00 will be charged to cover the cost of the recognition.
THIRD MILLENNIUM PROGRAM
This Catholic Scout program is for all Cub Scouts (ages 6 through 10). The Award consists of a certificate. This program explores Jesus, his birth, the Holy Family, and the new millennium. There is no workbook for this program. Necessary materials and an application will be handed out. Much of the work will be done during the final meeting, after the Scout has completed the requirements for his corresponding religious award. The only prerequisite for this award is that the Scout be a practicing Catholic and have earned the religious award that corresponds to his age.
AD ALTARE DEI AND POPE PIUS XII AWARDS
These Boy Scout Catholic Awards will also be offered if there is interest on the part of any Boy Scouts. The International Awareness Recognition and Millennium Program can also be earned in the context of the Boy Scout awards.
MEETING AND REGISTRATION
It is recommended that all Scouts attend all meetings, but no Scout will be excluded from the program due to scheduling conflicts. If a scheduling conflict arises, alternative arrangements may be made.
